Axel's take: 9.1/10

A strong romantic pick for personal service and colonial character, provided stairs aren't a problem. a 12-suite upscale boutique hacienda above downtown Puerto Vallarta, scored for what it is.

Hacienda San Angel is a 12-suite upscale boutique hacienda, with antique-filled interiors, garden courtyards and views over downtown Puerto Vallarta. It's a strong pick for couples who want character rather than a conventional beach resort. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness and attentive staff; overnight guests on Tripadvisor also describe warm service and beautifully maintained surroundings. Three pools, included continental breakfast and a rooftop restaurant give this small property plenty to offer.

The practical compromises matter: it's uphill, not beachfront, and the hotel confirms every suite requires stairs—the restaurant elevator doesn't solve room access. Suites differ in size and outlook, so choose carefully. The hotel also lists a 5% service fee in addition to taxes. We'd skip it for step-free access or a beach-first holiday; families should confirm eligibility before booking.

• Best for: couples on a romantic break; travelers who appreciate antiques and architecture; boutique-hotel lovers exploring downtown

• Watch out for: stairs to every suite and an uphill return; 5% service fee in addition to taxes; restricted stays with children

• Location: Hillside downtown setting near the Malecón and restaurants; not beachfront.

• Rooms: Twelve individually decorated suites across connected villas; size, views and stair counts vary.

• Cleanliness: Recent verified guests consistently praise cleanliness and upkeep.

• Service: Personal, accommodating staff are a recurring strength in overnight reviews.

• Amenities: Three guest pools, continental breakfast, rooftop dining and paid in-suite spa treatments.

• Fees and surprises: Official policies list 20% tax plus a 5% service fee; family season is May–June, with limited exceptions otherwise.
