Axel's take: 7.7/10

A good-value marina base, better for exploring than an all-inclusive vacation. A simple, older mid-range hotel on Marina Vallarta, not a beachfront resort, scored for what it is.

Flamingo Vallarta is a simple, older mid-range hotel whose marina setting does much of the work. We'd pick it for an airport stopover or an affordable base with restaurants within walking distance. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, clean rooms and attractive pool gardens. Balconies or terraces add welcome outdoor space, and the overall appeal is traditional Mexican character rather than modern polish.

The compromises are recurring: dated furnishings, worn towels, unreliable room Wi-Fi and occasional maintenance problems. Food reviews are mixed, with repeated complaints about limited all-inclusive variety and drink restrictions; we'd lean toward eating around the marina instead. Pool loungers can be scarce in busy periods. Skip it if you need dependable connectivity, freshly updated rooms or a beach directly outside.

• Best for: Budget-conscious marina explorers; Airport stopovers; Travelers who prefer eating out

• Watch out for: Unreliable in-room Wi-Fi; Dated rooms and uneven maintenance; Limited all-inclusive food and drinks

• Location: On the marina near restaurants and the airport; not beachfront, and downtown requires transport.

• Rooms: Balconies or terraces are standard; guests describe spacious but dated rooms and worn towels.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength across booking sites, despite some individual housekeeping complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn consistent praise, though problem handling is not uniformly strong.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, gardens, restaurant, bar and exercise room; loungers can fill early.

• Fees and surprises: All-inclusive is optional and has drink restrictions; airport transfers and early or late checkout can cost extra.
