Axel's take: 8.3/10

Beautiful surroundings and refreshed rooms, with service still catching up to the luxury setting. a renovated five-star, wellness-focused beach resort in Mayakoba, scored for what it is.

Alila Mayakoba is a five-star, wellness-focused beach resort, reopened in February 2026 after its transformation from Andaz. It's a strong pick for couples who want mangroves, beach time and a serious spa rather than nightlife. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests praise the refreshed rooms, well-kept grounds and welcoming staff; breakfast and spa experiences stand out across sources.

The luxury experience isn't entirely consistent: restaurant service and follow-through attract repeated complaints, although October feedback is more positive. The sprawling lagoon-and-beach layout means cycling or relying on golf carts, and seasonal sargassum can compromise swimming. September guests reported Casa Amate closed for renovation; Hyatt now lists dinner hours, so confirm availability. We'd skip it for walkable town life or a guaranteed adults-only atmosphere. Evidence since the rebrand remains relatively limited.

Best for: couples seeking a quiet resort escape; spa and wellness travelers; nature lovers comfortable with a sprawling resort
Watch out for: uneven restaurant service and follow-through; golf-cart dependence between resort areas; seasonal seaweed affecting beach enjoyment
Location: Secluded Mayakoba setting; downtown Playa del Carmen requires a drive.
Rooms: Refreshed, comfortable rooms draw praise; beach and lagoon locations offer different levels of convenience.
Cleanliness: Strong recent cleanliness ratings, with occasional housekeeping follow-through complaints rather than a broad hygiene pattern.
Service: Warm staff are a strength, but restaurant speed and request handling remain inconsistent.
Amenities: Pools, a well-reviewed spa and hydrotherapy circuit, fitness center and complimentary bicycles; children are welcome.
Fees and surprises: Parking is complimentary; transfers, selected wellness experiences and pets cost extra. Confirm meal inclusions and Casa Amate availability.
