Axel's take: 8.6/10

Strong comfort and friendly service, provided you’re happy taking transport to the beach. a hillside 4-star hotel above Kata, not a beachfront resort, scored for what it is.

The Yama is a hillside 4-star rather than a beachfront resort, and it’s a strong pick for a quieter Kata base. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the spacious rooms, helpful staff and inviting pool; cleanliness also scores well overall. We’d choose it for relaxed pool time and good comfort for the money, rather than immediate access to the sand.

The main compromise is getting around. Recent Expedia guests describe the hill and walking route as inconvenient, particularly for exploring on foot. The hotel advertises a free Kata Beach shuttle five times daily, so outings need some planning. We’d skip it if spontaneous beach walks and evenings out without taxis are central to your holiday. Booking.com also lists a refundable cash damage deposit: arrive prepared.

  • Best for: couples seeking a quieter base; families prioritizing pool time; travelers comfortable using taxis

  • Watch out for: hillside location rather than beachfront; scheduled beach shuttle; refundable cash damage deposit

  • Location: Above Kata; recent guests find exploring on foot inconvenient.

  • Rooms: Superior rooms start at 32 square meters; guests repeatedly praise the space.

  • Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback, with occasional housekeeping lapses rather than a dominant pattern.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across the major review sites.

  • Amenities: Outdoor pool, jacuzzi, spa, gym, restaurant and children’s playroom are listed by the hotel.

  • Fees and surprises: Refundable cash deposit required; airport transfers and spa treatments cost extra.
