Axel's take: 7.8/10

Go for the passing ships and spacious rooms, not polished four-star finishes. an older, full-service waterfront hotel at the entrance to the Panama Canal, scored for what it is.

Radisson Hotel Panama Canal is an older, full-service waterfront hotel whose biggest draw is watching ships approach the canal. We'd pick it for a relaxed base near Amador and the convention center rather than a downtown city break. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the views, spacious rooms and friendly staff; recent Expedia reviews also make a solid case for cleanliness. Pools, a gym and on-site dining round out a practical, good-value stay.

The trade-off is uneven upkeep. Across both sites, guests describe dated bathrooms and recurring plumbing or air-conditioning problems, while some Tripadvisor reviewers mention hallway noise. You'll generally need rides for broader dining choices and sightseeing. Confirm the exact view category and whether breakfast is included. We'd skip it if you expect consistently polished four-star rooms or restaurants and nightlife on your doorstep.

• Best for: canal and ship enthusiasts; convention attendees; families wanting spacious rooms and pools

• Watch out for: dated rooms and uneven maintenance; limited nearby dining and shopping; room views vary

• Location: Waterfront Amador setting near the convention center; plan on rides for most city outings.

• Rooms: Spacious, but dated; plumbing, air-conditioning and hallway-noise complaints recur.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised in recent Expedia reviews, though some Tripadvisor guests report bathroom shortcomings.

• Service: Friendly staff earn consistent praise; pre-arrival communication and room allocation are less reliable.

• Amenities: Outdoor pools, a children's pool, gym, restaurants and café; the official site lists a free Albrook Mall shuttle.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free; breakfast depends on the booking plan, and airport transfers cost extra.
