Axel's take: 8.6/10

Big bay views and dependable comfort make this older hotel a strong-value choice. An older, full-service 4-star overlooking Panama Bay, scored for what it is.

Plaza Paitilla Inn is an older, full-service 4-star in Punta Paitilla, and we'd pick it for generous rooms, bay views and good value rather than cutting-edge design. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, comfortable beds, helpful staff and the varied breakfast buffet. The outdoor pool and proximity to the Cinta Costera add to its appeal. Choose an explicitly bay-facing room if the panorama is your priority.

The trade-off is an older building whose age still shows in places, despite refreshed rooms. Nearby restaurants are convenient, but busy roads and uneven sidewalks make walking less effortless than the waterfront location suggests. We'd skip it for a sleek luxury stay; for comfortable city sightseeing with a memorable outlook, it's a strong pick.

• Best for: Value-minded city explorers; Couples wanting bay views; Travelers who appreciate spacious rooms

• Watch out for: Older interiors in places; Busy roads and uneven sidewalks; Book a bay-facing room explicitly

• Location: Near the Cinta Costera and restaurants; surrounding traffic complicates walking.

• Rooms: Spacious and comfortable, with refreshed rooms but some older details; views depend on category.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent reviews, supported by strong Booking.com and Expedia cleanliness scores.

• Service: Recent guests generally describe friendly, helpful staff, with occasional check-in complaints.

• Amenities: Outdoor and children's pools, gym, restaurant, bar and spa; breakfast draws repeated praise.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking is free; valet, early check-in and late checkout carry additional charges.
