Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong Old Town base, provided you choose your room carefully. An upscale boutique hotel in the heart of Casco Viejo, scored for what it is.

Hotel San Felipe is an upscale, 36-room boutique hotel whose biggest strengths are its walkable Casco Viejo location, modern rooms and helpful staff. It's a strong pick for exploring Panama City's historic quarter without sacrificing comfort. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and welcoming reception teams. The hotel's restaurant, rooftop bar and spa add appeal beyond the rooms.

The main caveat is room placement. Accommodation spans two buildings across the street, and several Tripadvisor guests describe late-night noise in the restaurant-and-rooftop building; management acknowledges the main building can suit quieter stays better. We'd request that building, away from the street, rather than leave allocation to chance. Breakfast earns mixed feedback, and inclusion depends on your booking. Choose it for sightseeing and dining; skip it if guaranteed nighttime quiet is essential.

• Best for: Couples exploring Casco Viejo; Car-free sightseeing breaks; Travelers who enjoy restaurants and rooftop bars

• Watch out for: Late-night noise near the rooftop bar; Rooms split between two buildings; Breakfast inclusion varies by booking

• Location: Central Casco Viejo, with historic sights, cafés and restaurants easily reached on foot.

• Rooms: Modern, comfortable rooms; some have patios or city views, but building and position matter.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com and Expedia guest feedback.

• Service: Reception staff receive widespread praise for friendliness and practical help.

• Amenities: Restaurant, rooftop bar, spa treatments, elevator and free Wi-Fi.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking costs extra; confirm breakfast inclusion and your room's building before arrival.
