Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong city base for breakfast and comfort, rather than flawless five-star polish. a large, five-star business hotel in Panama City’s financial district, scored for what it is.

Riu Plaza Panama is a large, five-star business hotel in the financial district, and we’d choose it for a comfortable city stay rather than intimate luxury. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spacious rooms, helpful staff and an unusually varied breakfast buffet. Cleanliness earns strong overall marks, while the pool, gym and several dining options make it practical between outings or meetings. Nearby restaurants and shops add convenience.

The trade-off is consistency. Although RIU presented renovated facilities in April 2026, later guests still describe some tired room details, and musty odors recur in a minority of reports across sources. Busy breakfasts and occasional elevator waits reinforce the big-hotel feel. Parking costs extra, and RIU sells both room-only and breakfast-inclusive stays. It’s a strong pick for business travelers and city explorers; we’d skip it for boutique atmosphere or exacting luxury expectations.

• Best for: business travelers; city explorers who like full-service hotels; travelers who prioritize breakfast

• Watch out for: musty odors reported in some rooms; busy breakfasts and occasional elevator waits; paid parking; breakfast inclusion varies

• Location: Financial-district base with nearby restaurants and shops, rather than a historic-neighborhood setting.

• Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable, but recent reports suggest uneven condition despite announced renovations.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest ratings, tempered by recurring odor complaints affecting some rooms.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a consistent strength; individual service lapses still occur.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, gym, several dining venues, bars and extensive meeting facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is charged separately; check breakfast inclusion. RIU presented renovated facilities in April 2026.
