Axel's take: 9.2/10

Historic character and standout hospitality make this a strong Casco Viejo luxury pick. a historic luxury hotel in the heart of Casco Viejo, scored for what it is.

La Compañía is a historic luxury hotel, not a standard four-star, and we'd put it high on the list for exploring Casco Viejo. Its restored Spanish, French and American wings give it real architectural character. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable rooms, excellent cleanliness and staff who make the stay feel personal. Five restaurants, a rooftop pool and a spa give you plenty of reasons to linger between neighborhood walks.

The main compromise is quiet: street-facing rooms attract noise complaints, while occasional courtyard events mean inward-facing rooms aren't a guarantee either. Request a quieter room and ask about scheduled functions. Breakfast isn't included with every booking, and valet parking costs extra. It's a strong pick for couples and history-minded travelers; we'd skip it if undisturbed early nights are your priority.

• Best for: couples seeking historic luxury; architecture and history enthusiasts; exploring Casco Viejo on foot

• Watch out for: street noise in outward-facing rooms; occasional courtyard event noise; breakfast and valet parking may cost extra

• Location: Central Casco Viejo, within walking distance of museums, plazas, restaurants and bars.

• Rooms: Distinctive historic wings; guests praise comfortable beds and attractive rooms, but noise varies by position.

• Cleanliness: Exceptionally strong cleanliness feedback across Expedia, Booking.com and Tripadvisor.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff and helpful concierge service are consistent strengths in recent reviews.

• Amenities: Five restaurants, two bars, rooftop pool, full-service spa and a 24-hour gym.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; valet parking, airport transfers and dog stays carry additional charges.
