Come for Casco Viejo’s character, but take the nighttime noise seriously. a historic luxury boutique hotel on Casco Viejo’s Plaza Herrera, scored for what it is.

American Trade Hotel is a historic luxury boutique in a restored 1917 building, and a strong pick for exploring Casco Viejo on foot. Its appeal is character rather than resort-scale facilities: handsome interiors, comfortable rooms and a small rooftop pool. Expedia’s recent guests repeatedly praise cleanliness and helpful staff; Tripadvisor guests also appreciate the architecture and central setting.

The main compromise is sleep. Guests across both sites describe nighttime music, particularly in plaza-facing rooms, with several Tripadvisor reports of bass continuing into the early hours. Church bells can affect other exposures, so discuss room placement before booking rather than assuming a quieter side solves everything. Some recent guests also report unreliable hot water and maintenance delays—disappointing at this level. We’d choose it for atmosphere and walkability, but skip it if quiet nights and consistently polished luxury are priorities.

• Best for: couples exploring Casco Viejo; historic-design enthusiasts; travelers prioritizing restaurants and nightlife

• Watch out for: late-night music in plaza-facing rooms; church bells on some exposures; occasional hot-water and maintenance problems

• Location: Central Plaza Herrera setting, within walking distance of old-town sights, restaurants and bars.

• Rooms: Characterful rooms with comfortable beds; views and noise exposure vary substantially.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength in recent Expedia reviews and Booking.com’s category ratings.

• Service: Usually friendly and helpful, though some guests describe slow maintenance follow-through.

• Amenities: Small rooftop pool, gym, restaurant, coffee shop and bar; not a full-scale resort.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion depends on the booking; parking, airport transfers and pets carry extra charges. The supplied website belongs to Hotel Plaza Herrera, not American Trade Hotel.
