Axel's take: 5.6/10

The beach is the draw, but unreliable room standards make this a gamble. a basic 2-star beachfront motel on Chesapeake Bay, scored for what it is.

Ocean View Inn is a basic 2-star beachfront motel whose strongest selling point is direct access to Chesapeake Bay. It's worth considering only if beach access and keeping costs down outweigh room comfort. Recent Expedia guests include satisfied visitors praising clean rooms and helpful staff, and some rooms have kitchenettes. But the overall picture is below what we'd expect even from a simple motel.

Cleanliness and maintenance are the sticking points: Booking.com guests flag housekeeping gaps, while recent Tripadvisor reviews repeatedly describe dirty rooms, smoke smells and, in several cases, cockroaches. Service also divides opinion, with friendly encounters alongside complaints about refund handling. We'd skip it for a family vacation or any stay where dependable cleanliness matters more than being steps from the sand.

• Best for: budget travelers prioritizing beach access; self-catering visitors willing to accept substantial trade-offs

• Watch out for: recurring cleanliness and pest reports; smoke odors despite a smoke-free policy; disputed refunds and uneven problem handling

• Location: Direct Chesapeake Bay beach access is the clearest strength; this is not Virginia Beach's boardwalk strip.

• Rooms: Basic rooms, some with kitchenettes; condition and comfort vary considerably in guest reports.

• Cleanliness: Some recent guests report clean rooms, but dirt, housekeeping gaps and cockroach complaints recur.

• Service: Staff earn genuine praise, though complaints about management and refund handling are a concern.

• Amenities: The hotel lists free Wi-Fi, free parking, microwaves and guest laundry; selected rooms have kitchenettes.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists charges for early check-in and late checkout; parking spaces are limited.
