Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong golf-and-greenery retreat, with warmer hospitality than modern room polish. an upscale, old-school golf resort in Nairobi’s leafy northern suburbs, scored for what it is.

Windsor is an upscale, Victorian-style golf resort in Ridgeways, and a strong pick if you want Nairobi with space to unwind. The 18-hole course, wooded walking tracks and heated pool give it substance beyond the country-club setting. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, while Booking.com guests highlight the greenery, recreation facilities and comfortable rooms. We'd choose it for a golf break or a relaxed stay rather than a city-centre base.

The trade-off is old-school accommodation rather than contemporary luxury. Some guests find the rooms ready for updating, and a recent overnight review reports no air-conditioning; Expedia lists portable fans. Weekends can also feel busier around the pool and golfing areas. We'd skip it if air-conditioning, freshly modern interiors or walking access to central Nairobi are priorities.

• Best for: golfers wanting an on-site course; couples seeking a green city escape; families wanting space and recreation

• Watch out for: air-conditioning should not be assumed; some rooms feel dated; busier weekends around shared facilities

• Location: Leafy Ridgeways setting outside central Nairobi; better for a retreat than city-centre sightseeing on foot.

• Rooms: Rooms, suites and family cottages overlook the course; traditional interiors and fan cooling may not suit modern-luxury expectations.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent overnight guest feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff earn repeated praise across several sites, including recent returning guests.

• Amenities: An 18-hole course, heated pool, gym, spa, tennis, squash and wooded jogging tracks.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is free; golf and equipment hire cost extra, as do airport transfers; check whether breakfast is included.
