#2 of 9 hotels in Karen by Axel's take. Karen is #5 of 8 places to stay in Nairobi. The best hotels in Karen, ranked · Where to stay in Nairobi

Axel's take: 9.1/10

A polished safari bookend with generous suites and genuinely attentive service. a five-star all-suite boutique hotel in leafy Karen, scored for what it is.

Hemingways Nairobi is a five-star, 45-suite boutique hotel that feels more country estate than city base. It's a strong pick before or after safari: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spacious suites, immaculate upkeep and staff who handle requests thoughtfully. Garden-facing terraces, Ngong Hills views and consistently well-received food make staying put appealing; this is more than somewhere to recover from a flight.

The main compromise is location. Leafy Karen supplies the quiet, but central Nairobi outings require driving, so we'd skip it for a walkable city break. The hotel offers a pool and spa, though a recent detailed Tripadvisor review flags limited strength-training equipment. Expedia lists an early 10 a.m. checkout and chargeable airport transfers: confirm departure arrangements before booking, especially with an evening flight.

  • Best for: pre- and post-safari stays; couples seeking quiet luxury; travelers who prize spacious suites

  • Watch out for: car-dependent suburban location; 10 a.m. checkout; limited strength-training equipment

  • Location: Peaceful Karen setting near the Karen Blixen Museum; better for unwinding than exploring on foot.

  • Rooms: Generous suites with private outdoor space; room size and comfort earn consistent praise.

  • Cleanliness: A standout across sources, with strong cleanliness ratings and repeated praise for immaculate upkeep.

  • Service: Warm, attentive staff are a recurring strength in recent guest reviews.

  • Amenities: Temperature-controlled outdoor pool, spa, sauna, steam room and gym; serious lifters may find equipment limited.

  • Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; Expedia lists checkout before 10 a.m. Parking is complimentary.
