Axel's take: 7.6/10

A practical north-Mérida base, with spacious rooms but inconsistent upkeep. a simple 3-star hotel in northern Mérida near the Siglo XXI convention center, scored for what it is.

Hotel Siglo 21 is a simple 3-star that makes most sense for convention visits and errands in northern Mérida, rather than sightseeing downtown. We'd consider it for the room space and convenient access to the Maya museum, supermarkets and malls. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms and helpful staff, while the outdoor pool adds something beyond the basics. It's a good-value base if location matters more than polish.

The compromises are maintenance and consistency. Hot-water complaints recur across both booking sites, and recent Expedia guests mention worn towels, tired furnishings and air-conditioning faults. Wi-Fi is another weak point, so we'd skip it for connection-dependent work. Choose somewhere central for a walkable historic-center stay, and don't assume the advertised parking means a private hotel lot: the official site specifies free parking off the premises.

• Best for: Siglo XXI convention visitors; budget-conscious north-Mérida stays; travelers prioritizing room space

• Watch out for: inconsistent hot water and maintenance; unreliable Wi-Fi; parking is off the premises

• Location: Convenient for the convention center, Maya museum and shopping; not a historic-center base.

• Rooms: Guests often praise the space, but recent reviews flag tired furnishings and occasional air-conditioning faults.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength: Booking.com scores cleanliness 8.0 and Expedia 8.4, with repeated positive guest comments.

• Service: Helpful staff attract frequent praise, though individual reception experiences vary.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, air conditioning, 24-hour reception and free Wi-Fi; the connection receives weaker feedback.

• Fees and surprises: Official parking is free but off-site; confirm any airport transfer directly after a recent guest reported none was available.
