Axel's take: 7.0/10

A practical downtown base, but location outshines room condition. A basic 3-star colonial-style hotel in Mérida’s historic center, scored for what it is.

Hotel Colón is a basic 3-star in Mérida’s historic center, now part of Grupo Kavia. It’s a reasonable pick for travelers who prioritize sightseeing on foot over polished rooms. The colonial architecture and outdoor pool add appeal, while Expedia guests regularly praise the location and helpful staff. Overall guest ratings point to a serviceable stay, not a standout.

The compromise is uneven upkeep. Recent reviews include bathroom maintenance problems, damp or sewage smells, and inconsistent cleaning, alongside guests reporting clean, comfortable stays. Noise also crops up, and Booking.com’s weak Wi-Fi rating makes this a poor bet for remote work. We’d consider it for a short, sightseeing-focused visit; skip it if spotless bathrooms, dependable internet or quiet nights are priorities.

• Best for: Budget-minded city explorers; Short sightseeing stays; Travelers exploring without a car

• Watch out for: Uneven bathroom upkeep and cleaning; Noise in some rooms; Unreliable Wi-Fi

• Location: The main strength: an easy walk to the cathedral, central square, restaurants and shops.

• Rooms: Basic air-conditioned rooms; maintenance, ventilation and noise vary by room.

• Cleanliness: Many positive reports, but recent bathroom and housekeeping complaints warrant caution.

• Service: Staff receive frequent praise, though experiences are not uniformly positive.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, restaurant and free Wi-Fi; internet scores lag well behind location.

• Fees and surprises: The official booking engine lists paid parking; confirm arrangements and breakfast inclusion before booking.
