#4 of 9 hotels in Capitol Square & Downtown by Axel's take. Capitol Square & Downtown is #1 of 5 places to stay in Madison, Wisconsin. The best hotels in Capitol Square & Downtown, ranked · Where to stay in Madison, Wisconsin

Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong downtown choice with standout cleanliness, helpful staff and a Capitol Square address. an upscale, full-service hotel on Madison’s Capitol Square, scored for what it is.

This upscale, full-service hotel is a strong pick for exploring Madison without relying on a car. Its Capitol Square location is the headline attraction, but the praise goes beyond the address: Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly highlight helpful staff, comfortable rooms and excellent housekeeping. Booking.com’s strong cleanliness and comfort scores reinforce that picture. An indoor pool, fitness center, The Post restaurant and complimentary airport shuttle make it practical for families and business travelers alike.

The trade-offs are mostly about room choice and extras. Not every room has a Capitol or lake view; some face rooftops or the indoor pool. A few recent guests find the decor dated, though that is a minority view. On-site parking is paid valet, and breakfast inclusion depends on your booking. We’d skip it if free parking or contemporary design matters more than downtown convenience.

Best for: car-free downtown weekends; families wanting an indoor pool; Capitol and conference visitors
Watch out for: paid valet-only on-site parking; room views vary substantially; breakfast not automatically included
Location: Directly across from the Capitol, with restaurants, State Street and Monona Terrace within walking distance.
Rooms: Comfortable, well-equipped rooms; choose the category carefully for views, layout and pool access.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength across guest reviews, supported by high cleanliness scores.
Service: Repeated praise for friendly front-desk staff, valet attendants and airport-shuttle service.
Amenities: Indoor heated pool, gym, restaurant/bar and free airport shuttle operating daily from 7:30 AM to 10:30 PM.
Fees and surprises: On-site parking carries a valet charge; check breakfast inclusion and arrange airport transfers ahead.
