#4 of 9 hotels in Lazimpat by Axel's take. Lazimpat is #4 of 8 places to stay in Kathmandu. The best hotels in Lazimpat, ranked · Where to stay in Kathmandu

Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong budget pick for friendly hosts, clean rooms and rooftop downtime. a simple, family-run budget hostel near Thamel, scored for what it is.

Famous House Kathmandu is a simple, family-run hostel with dorms and private rooms, a short walk from Thamel. It’s a strong pick for travelers who value helpful people and clean basics over hotel polish. Recent Booking.com, Agoda and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the hosts, comfortable rooms and cleanliness; the rooftop café adds somewhere to unwind without going out.

The main caution is noise, not a recurring service problem: some Agoda guests mention traffic, nearby school activity or barking dogs, although others describe peaceful nights. There’s no elevator, and dorm and bathroom arrangements vary, so choose your room carefully. We’d shortlist it for budget-minded solo travelers and couples, but skip it if step-free access or reliably quiet sleep is essential.

  • Best for: solo travelers on a budget; couples wanting simple private rooms; backpackers who appreciate helpful hosts

  • Watch out for: occasional traffic, school and dog noise; no elevator; bathroom arrangements vary by room

  • Location: On Lainchaur Marg, roughly five to ten minutes’ walk from central Thamel.

  • Rooms: Private doubles and mixed or female dorms; recent guests praise comfort and condition.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent Booking.com, Agoda and Tripadvisor feedback.

  • Service: Warm, hands-on hosts and helpful local guidance are the clearest recurring positives.

  • Amenities: Rooftop café, free Wi-Fi, luggage storage and parking; hostel facilities rather than resort extras.

  • Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; confirm breakfast inclusion and payment options, which differ across listings.
