Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong Edinburgh luxury pick, with welcoming staff and a few townhouse compromises. a design-led five-star townhouse hotel in Edinburgh’s New Town, scored for what it is.

Kimpton Charlotte Square is a design-led five-star townhouse hotel whose strongest assets are its New Town location and genuinely welcoming service. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the staff, comfortable beds and distinctive interiors; Booking.com’s ratings also back up the comfort and cleanliness. We’d choose it for a city break with character: BABA, the glass-roofed courtyard and an indoor pool give you reasons to linger between sightseeing trips.

The caveat is that five-star doesn’t mean uniformly spacious or silent. Some recent guests describe cramped rooms or corridor noise, so check the room category and request a quieter position if sleep matters most. Breakfast isn’t automatically included, and paid valet parking needs advance booking. We’d skip it if guaranteed space and soundproofing matter more than atmosphere.

• Best for: couples on a city break; design-conscious sightseers; travelers bringing pets

• Watch out for: some compact rooms; corridor noise in some rooms; paid valet parking requires advance booking

• Location: Walkable New Town base beside Charlotte Square, close to Princes Street and restaurants.

• Rooms: Characterful interiors and well-reviewed beds; space and sound insulation vary by room.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness ratings across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor outweigh isolated complaints.

• Service: Friendly, attentive staff are a consistent strength, despite occasional slow follow-through.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, spa, gym, sauna, steam room, BABA restaurant and a glass-roofed courtyard.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; valet parking and treatments are charged separately; pets stay without an extra fee.
