Axel's take: 7.7/10

A useful family base, with friendly staff but uneven room standards. a practical 4-star chain hotel beside Edinburgh Zoo, scored for what it is.

This is a practical 4-star chain hotel beside Edinburgh Zoo, not a polished city-centre retreat. It's a good pick for families who will use the indoor pool and don't mind taking the bus into town. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, while cleanliness generally scores well. Breakfast earns plenty of positive mentions, and limited free hotel parking adds convenience for drivers.

The main compromise is inconsistent room condition. Some bedrooms have been refurbished, but recent guests on both sites still describe dated interiors and cramped, tired bathrooms. We'd choose it for zoo visits and useful facilities rather than four-star polish. Skip it if you want Edinburgh's main sights on your doorstep or reliably modern rooms. Parking is first come, first served; the adjacent zoo overflow can involve a charge.

• Best for: families visiting Edinburgh Zoo; drivers happy to bus into town; travelers wanting an indoor pool

• Watch out for: uneven bedroom and bathroom condition; bus ride to central sights; limited free hotel parking

• Location: Beside the zoo, with convenient buses into central Edinburgh and to the airport.

• Rooms: Some refurbished bedrooms, but recurring reports of dated decor and small, worn bathrooms.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive recent feedback and solid category ratings; not a defining weakness.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across recent reviews.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, gym, sauna, restaurant and bar; breakfast costs extra unless included.

• Fees and surprises: Free hotel parking is limited; zoo overflow charges can apply, and eligible stays attract Edinburgh's visitor levy.
