Axel's take on Da'an & East District: #1 of 9 in Taipei, 8.3/10
The best choice for living comfortably between sightseeing outings. Excellent dining, strong hotels and appealing residential streets put it first overall, though hotel value is weak and the experience varies by address.
Zhongxiao East Road supplies the department stores; the lanes around Zhongxiao Fuxing and Zhongxiao Dunhua supply independent shops, restaurants and cocktail bars. Farther south, Ren’ai Road and the streets toward Da’an Forest Park offer a more residential mood. This is a particularly satisfying base when meals and neighborhood walks matter as much as headline sights.
Choose the street carefully: the shopping corridor is not the same experience as the greener streets farther south. Da’an Forest Park is not beside every East District address, and Yongkang Street is a separate pocket. Stay for a longer visit or a comfortable family routine; skip it if you want old Taipei’s temples and pedestrian crowds immediately outside.
- Best for: families, food lovers, luxury travelers, shopping
- Skip it if: You want a pedestrian entertainment district; You expect every address to overlook a park
- Getting around: Blue at Zhongxiao Fuxing/Dunhua; Brown at Zhongxiao Fuxing and Da’an; Red farther south. Shopping lanes are walkable. TPE: Airport MRT then Blue from Main; TSA has direct Brown service to Zhongxiao Fuxing or Da’an.
- After dark: Restaurants and cocktail bars animate selected lanes; residential streets farther south offer a calmer alternative to the shopping corridor.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $194 a night
