Axel's take on Montmartre & Pigalle: #7 of 12 in Paris, 7.9/10
Choose hilltop romance or Pigalle nightlife, but know which you're booking. Strong hotels, abundant nearby options and good value earn seventh, while hills, sightseeing distance and uneven neighborhood character reduce its all-round usefulness.
Montmartre and Pigalle offer two distinct stays. Around Abbesses and the hill's smaller streets, the appeal is village scenery, stairways and walks toward Sacré-Cœur. Downhill, Pigalle is more about bars, music venues and the food-shopping streets leading into the ninth arrondissement. The concert halls along Boulevard Marguerite-de-Rochechouart remain a genuine part of its evening identity.
We like it for couples who enjoy walking and travelers who want evenings nearby. We like it less for a short, museum-heavy first visit. Hills add effort, and the postcard streets attract crowds. Do not assume an address near Pigalle will deliver the quiet atmosphere of upper Montmartre.
- Best for: couples, nightlife
- Skip it if: Steep streets or stairs are difficult; You want central museums within easy walking distance
- Getting around: Métro 2/12, plus the funicular for the Sacré-Cœur climb; Montmartre walkable but hilly; CDG via RER B then métro, ORY via Métro 14 then 12 at Madeleine.
- After dark: Pigalle's bars and concert venues stay active late; upper Montmartre has quieter stretches once the main visitor crowds disperse.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $244 a night · usually 7% under the public rate
