Axel's take on Naval Station Norfolk: #6 of 6 in Norfolk, 2.6/10
Stay for a base-related purpose, not general Norfolk sightseeing. Base-related convenience is its narrow strength; weak sightseeing access, limited hotel choice and modest character make it last for a general stay.
The Hampton Boulevard approach to Naval Station Norfolk is a working military environment, not a sightseeing waterfront. Its strongest case is practical: reporting for duty, visiting an authorized contact or minimizing repeated journeys to the installation. Old Dominion University’s venues lie farther south along Hampton Boulevard, making this a workable driving base for some campus events.
Base access must be validated; sleeping nearby does not grant entry or permission to wander among ships. For an ordinary holiday, choose downtown and see the naval waterfront on an organized boat excursion instead. Restaurants, museums and nightlife are separate outings here. Confirm access arrangements before booking, and do not choose this area simply because the naval station appears on your sightseeing list.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, sports fans
- Skip it if: You have no base-related reason to stay; You expect unrestricted access to ships
- Getting around: Routes 2 and 21 serve the Navy Exchange Mall approach, not unrestricted movement around the installation; check your walk and gate arrangements. A car is useful for ODU and downtown. Transfer from ORF or PHF by road.
- After dark: Plan dinner elsewhere rather than expecting a nightlife district; local trip advice favors Ghent or downtown for evenings out.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $168 a night
