Axel's take on SoHo & Greenwich Village: #7 of 12 in New York, 7.4/10
Our pick for couples who want New York outside the sightseeing checklist. Rewarding streets and abundant shopping and dining deliver character, but weak value and less convenient sightseeing access lower the overall rank.
Choose this part of downtown when the pleasure of the trip is walking between things. SoHo supplies cast-iron streets and serious shopping; Greenwich Village adds Washington Square, small performance venues and a less rigid street pattern. Christopher Street and Stonewall give LGBTQ history a physical presence rather than making it an optional excursion.
The two neighborhoods are not interchangeable after dark. SoHo’s retail streets and the Village’s dining-and-bar streets have different rhythms, so check the actual block before choosing. This is a particularly good couples’ base, but less persuasive for early nights or a schedule dominated by Midtown museums and Broadway. Subway access is strongest near the major junctions.
- Best for: couples, shopping, luxury travelers
- Skip it if: You need reliably early nights; Almost every outing is in Midtown
- Getting around: West 4th Street has A/B/C/D/E/F/M; 1, 6 and R/W serve other nearby streets; walk between SoHo, the Village and Nolita; JFK via E–AirTrain, LGA via subway–Q70, EWR via Penn–NJ Transit.
- After dark: Village restaurant, comedy and bar streets stay busy late; retail-focused SoHo blocks are less continuously animated after shops close.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $685 a night · usually 6% under the public rate
