Axel's take on Hell's Kitchen & Hudson Yards: #3 of 12 in New York, 7.7/10
Choose your street carefully: neighborhood nightlife and corporate towers feel different. Strong hotels and abundant restaurants support third place, but character and subway convenience vary sharply between Ninth Avenue and the western towers.
Hell’s Kitchen and Hudson Yards offer two different West Side stays. Around Ninth Avenue, restaurants, gay bars and theatergoers give the streets an evening identity of their own. Farther south and west, Hudson Yards brings towers, large-scale shopping and convenient access to the Javits convention complex rather than the same neighborhood texture.
The important distinction is your actual walk to a train. Near Eighth Avenue, several lines are handy; toward Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, cross-town walking becomes routine unless the 7 suits your plans. Stay for Broadway-adjacent dinners, LGBTQ nightlife or a convention. Skip it if you expect every West Side address to be equally connected.
- Best for: LGBTQ+ travelers, business trips and conventions
- Skip it if: You dislike walking to the subway; You want one consistent neighborhood atmosphere
- Getting around: A/C/E run along Eighth Avenue; the 7 terminates at 34th Street–Hudson Yards, and M42/M34 buses help cross-town; walk to theaters or Javits; JFK via E–AirTrain, LGA via 7–Q70, EWR via Penn–NJ Transit.
- After dark: Ninth Avenue and the gay-bar streets stay social late; the Hudson Yards end is more destination-led and less continuous for bar-hopping.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $493 a night
