The best hotels in Pacific Grove, Monterey, California, ranked

Axel's take on Pacific Grove: #3 of 6 in Monterey, California, 6.5/10

Pacific Grove trades tourist bustle for neighborhood streets and coastal walks. Pacific Grove offers coastal character and better value than the leading waterfront bases, but fewer nearby choices and address-dependent convenience hold it back.

Pacific Grove feels like a small coastal town rather than an attraction strip. Lighthouse Avenue supplies the downtown cafés and restaurants, Lovers Point anchors the shoreline, and Victorian houses give the intervening streets their character. It is especially appealing when beach walks and unhurried mornings are part of the trip, not just gaps between sightseeing stops.

Choose near downtown or Lovers Point for the best balance of meals and walking. The quieter streets toward Asilomar are a different proposition, with more dependence on bikes, buses or a car. Recent visitors report that walking and cycling toward Cannery Row work well, but trips across to Carmel require more planning. Skip Pacific Grove if you want a late bar crawl.

• Best for: families, couples, a quiet stay
• Skip it if: You want substantial nightlife; You expect every Pacific Grove address to be equally walkable
• Getting around: MST 1/2 connect Pacific Grove and Monterey; walk downtown and the Lovers Point shoreline, or cycle toward the aquarium. MRY: taxi. SJC: Groome to Monterey, then bus or taxi.
• After dark: Dinner-focused and generally quiet afterwards; visitors consistently steer nightlife seekers toward Monterey instead.
• Rates: Typical Axel rate $232 a night · usually 9% under the public rate
