#8 of 9 hotels in Pacific Grove by Axel's take. Pacific Grove is #3 of 6 places to stay in Monterey, California. The best hotels in Pacific Grove, ranked · Where to stay in Monterey, California

Axel's take: 7.2/10

A good coastal base, but uneven upkeep keeps expectations in check. a simple 3-star coastal lodge with separate cottage suites, scored for what it is.

Lighthouse Lodge & Cottages is a simple 3-star in Pacific Grove, split between motel-style lodge rooms and cottage suites across the street. We'd consider it for coastal walks and a quieter base outside Monterey's busiest areas. Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the location and friendly staff, and many describe clean, comfortable rooms. Free parking and an outdoor pool add practical appeal.

The catch is inconsistent upkeep: recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews mention worn furnishings, stained carpets and maintenance problems alongside much happier stays. Choose your room category carefully; cottage photos don't represent every lodge room. The hotel includes a breakfast buffet with cottages, while lodge guests pay to upgrade their basic breakfast. Some rooms overlook the neighboring cemetery. We'd skip it if spotless finishes and reliably updated rooms matter more than location.

Best for: Travelers prioritizing coastal walks; Families wanting cottage-suite space; Road-trippers seeking free parking
Watch out for: Uneven room condition and cleaning; Different lodge and cottage inclusions; Cemetery views from some rooms
Location: Near Point Pinos Lighthouse and coastal paths, away from central Monterey's bustle.
Rooms: Lodge rooms and cottage suites differ substantially; dated furnishings and maintenance complaints recur.
Cleanliness: Generally positive booking-site ratings, but repeated recent reports of stained carpets and missed cleaning.
Service: Friendly staff are a consistent strength, though problem resolution receives mixed reports.
Amenities: Outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi and parking; confirm hot-tub availability after a summer closure report.
Fees and surprises: Cottage buffet breakfast is included; lodge breakfast upgrades and pets cost extra; no elevators.
