Axel's take on Wauwatosa & Mayfair: #4 of 5 in Milwaukee, 4.2/10
Choose it for west-side plans and shopping, not a car-free city break. Wauwatosa offers suburban character and better value than the central districts, but few nearby attractions and long sightseeing journeys limit its appeal.
Wauwatosa works when your trip points west: Mayfair shopping, the regional medical campus or family outings to the zoo. Keep its different settings straight. Mayfair Road is a commercial corridor; the Village around State Street and Harwood Avenue supplies the smaller-scale cafés, restaurants and strolling. Staying near Mayfair does not automatically put that Village atmosphere outside your door.
This is a useful suburban base with a car, not a substitute for downtown Milwaukee. Route 31 connects Mayfair and the Village with downtown, while CONNECT 1 serves the medical-campus corridor rather than the mall itself. Skip it if your days center on lakefront museums, evening shows or spontaneous neighborhood hopping.
- Best for: families, shopping, a quiet stay, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: You want Milwaukee’s main sights on foot; You expect Mayfair and the Village to feel like one walkable district
- Getting around: Route 31 serves Mayfair Road and the Village; Route 21 serves North Avenue, and CONNECT 1 serves the medical-campus corridor. Walk within individual districts, not between all of them; from MKE, taxi/rideshare or a rental car is simplest.
- After dark: Plan a Village dinner or taproom evening rather than downtown-style bar hopping; Mayfair’s appeal is shopping and dining, not a continuous late-night street scene.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $195 a night · usually 7% under the public rate

How to choose
- Choose Springhill Suites Milwaukee West Wauwatosa if you want a roomy medical-visit base with breakfast and parking included, without needing a full kitchen.
- Choose Residence Inn Milwaukee West if you need a quiet, kitchen-equipped suite for a longer medical-campus stay; don't count on the pool.

What paying more buys
Holiday Inn Express is cheaper than most here and includes breakfast and parking, but bathroom upkeep is a recurring weakness. Paying more for SpringHill Suites buys spacious sitting areas and stronger overall guest feedback; Residence Inn adds kitchen-equipped suites and a quiet setting. The difference matters less for a brief overnight if you can accept the cheaper hotel's maintenance risks. Typical rates with Axel here run from $112 a night at Holiday Inn Express Milwaukee-West Medical Center by IHG to $218 at Springhill Suites Milwaukee West Wauwatosa (last 30 days).
