Axel's take on East Town & Lakefront: #1 of 5 in Milwaukee, 8.1/10
The best all-round choice for museums, lake walks and downtown convenience. East Town leads for hotel quality and balances lakefront character with easy sightseeing, but its higher typical rates weaken value.
East Town is the downtown choice for travelers who would rather start with the art museum and Lake Michigan than a sports bar. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee Street and Cathedral Square connect office towers, restaurants and cultural stops; Discovery World and the lakefront give families a strong reason to stay east of the river.
The trade-off is atmosphere: these are partly business streets, not one continuous neighborhood shopping strip. For late-night bar hopping, Deer District or Walker’s Point is a better fit. Also check your exact lakefront approach: construction around Michigan Street, Art Museum Drive and Cass Street is scheduled through late November 2026.
- Best for: first-time visitors, families, luxury travelers, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You want a late-night bar strip outside; Your trip revolves around Fiserv Forum
- Getting around: Walk to museums, Cathedral Square and the lake; Hop M/L streetcars and CONNECT 1 connect downtown. From MKE, take the GreenLine to Water Street and walk east, or use taxi/rideshare; lakefront addresses have a longer walk from the airport bus.
- After dark: Plan on restaurant-and-cocktail evenings around Milwaukee Street; treat the lakefront as a walking destination rather than a late-night bar district.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $260 a night
