Axel's take on Venice & Marina del Rey: #7 of 11 in Los Angeles, 6.0/10
Choose Venice for street life, the Marina for a quieter waterfront stay. Venice and Marina del Rey offer coastal character and solid hotels, but limited doorstep options and awkward inland connections reduce their usefulness.
These are two different coastal stays. Venice puts the boardwalk, canals and Abbot Kinney's restaurants and shops into the picture: expressive, busy and increasingly polished alongside its beach culture. Marina del Rey is more about harbor paths, waterfront dining, kayaking and sailing. Choose the actual street carefully; a harbor address does not automatically mean a short walk to Venice's main attractions.
The coast works especially well by bicycle, but marina basins and major roads complicate apparently short walks. Neither neighborhood has rail, so inland sightseeing requires buses or road transport. We like it for couples and food-focused beach trips; Santa Monica is the simpler choice when straightforward transit matters more.
- Best for: couples, food lovers
- Skip it if: You need rail within walking distance; You assume every Marina address is beside Venice Beach
- Getting around: No rail; Metro 33 uses Venice Boulevard and Big Blue Bus 3 uses Lincoln; walk or cycle the coast; from LAX use a taxi or terminal shuttle followed by bus 3.
- After dark: Evening choices favor Venice's restaurant streets and Marina waterfront dining; do not expect the daytime boardwalk experience to define the whole evening.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $286 a night · usually 6% under the public rate
