Stay in Long Beach for Long Beach: the waterfront, Aquarium of the Pacific, convention center and restaurants around Pine Avenue and the Promenade. Downtown combines a walkable entertainment district with a substantial business-and-events role. Its LGBTQ+ nightlife is another reason to choose it deliberately, rather than simply treating it as an alternative address for a Hollywood holiday.

The A Line connects to Downtown LA, but the wider sightseeing geography remains awkward, especially for Hollywood and the Westside. Residents also describe considerable traffic and nightlife noise around some downtown streets. We would stay for a convention or a waterfront-focused break; most first-time LA visitors should base themselves farther north.

Axel's take on Long Beach: #11 of 11 in Los Angeles, 4.8/10

A good Long Beach stay, a weak base for wider Los Angeles. Long Beach offers good hotels and reasonable value, but the lowest access score makes its waterfront appeal a poor substitute for proximity to LA sights.
