Axel's take on Clovis: #3 of 5 in Fresno, 5.9/10
Old Town brings character; Shaw Avenue brings practical, car-oriented convenience. Clovis has the strongest hotel selection and appealing Old Town character, but higher typical rates and less convenient Fresno access hold it back.
Clovis gives you two different stays: Old Town's small storefronts around Pollasky Avenue and Fifth Street, or the practical shopping strips along Clovis Avenue and Shaw Avenue. Old Town is the draw for antique shops, independent meals, local bars and an evening stroll. Sierra Vista Mall serves the more car-oriented southern end.
For couples and families with a car, this is our best balance of neighborhood character and easy routines. Choose close to Old Town if walking matters; staying on Shaw is not the same experience. Downtown Fresno still requires a separate trip, and local bus hours are limited, particularly on Saturdays. Skip it for frequent late nights downtown without a car.
- Best for: couples, families, food lovers, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You need to reach downtown Fresno repeatedly; You rely on evening and weekend buses
- Getting around: Walk Old Town; Clovis Transit Green serves Shaw and Red links Fresno State with Clovis Transit Center; use a taxi or car from FAT.
- After dark: Old Town has restaurants, breweries and bars for an evening out; choose it over the Shaw shopping strips if you want that atmosphere.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $168 a night · usually 7% under the public rate
