Axel's take on East Riverfront & Rivertown: #5 of 6 in Detroit, 5.0/10
A calmer waterfront stay, with more planning between outings. Strong value and waterfront character help Rivertown, but limited hotel strength and few nearby choices leave it behind the more convenient central bases.
Stay east of Downtown if river walks matter more than being beside the main entertainment streets. The RiverWalk, Robert C. Valade Park and Dequindre Cut favor cycling, unhurried mornings and time outdoors. Warehouses, apartment buildings and stretches of Jefferson Avenue give Rivertown a looser feel than the downtown core.
The pleasant riverside route can disguise how far an address sits from Woodward. Jefferson has buses, but there's no neighborhood rail stop, and cross-town museum trips are less convenient. Choose it for a calmer couple's stay or family downtime, not a short, car-free visit. Check RiverWalk hours before relying on it for a late return.
- Best for: a quiet stay, couples
- Skip it if: You want nightlife outside your door; You have a short, transit-only itinerary
- Getting around: DDOT 9 runs along Jefferson; walk or cycle the RiverWalk and Dequindre Cut, but expect longer cross-town trips; from DTW, use a taxi or DAX downtown followed by a bus or rideshare.
- After dark: Expect a lower-key setting away from individual bars and waterfront events; the RiverWalk closes at 10 p.m., so plan street or rideshare returns.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $142 a night · usually 5% under the public rate
