Axel's take on Speedway & Airport: #4 of 6 in Daytona Beach, 5.4/10
Stay for racing or airport business, not for a conventional beach holiday. The strongest hotel scores and good value suit racing and airport trips, but beach access and seaside character fall behind.
This is Daytona's practical mainland base, organized around International Speedway Boulevard rather than the ocean. The Speedway and ONE DAYTONA provide the reason to stay: racing, track-related activities, restaurants and shops. Within ONE DAYTONA, walking works, and pedestrian bridges cross to the Speedway; outside that pocket, destinations are more spread out.
It makes sense for a race weekend, an airport stop or business around the airport and campuses. For a normal beach holiday, it is a compromise: you drive or take a bus to the sand and lose spontaneous seaside evenings. Major event nights also bring crowds to the very places that make this location convenient.
- Best for: sports fans, business trips and conventions, travelers on a budget, shopping
- Skip it if: The beach is the main reason for your trip; You want an extensively walkable neighborhood
- Getting around: ONE DAYTONA has internal walkways and Speedway footbridges; VoTran 18 serves International Speedway Boulevard and DAB baggage claim; use a taxi or rental car for simpler regional trips, and a prebooked shuttle or rental car from MCO/SFB.
- After dark: Event nights concentrate crowds around the track and ONE DAYTONA; otherwise evening activity is in the dining-and-entertainment complex, not along a seaside promenade.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $113 a night
