Axel's take on Dam Square & Old Centre: #4 of 12 in Amsterdam, 8.2/10
Choose convenience over calm in Amsterdam’s busiest historic streets. Outstanding transport, abundant doorstep attractions and strong hotels outweigh weaker value and a tourist-heavy setting that offers less calm and character.
Stay here for straightforward sightseeing: the Royal Palace, Oude Kerk, Kalverstraat shops and canal-cruise departures are close, with Centraal handy for day trips. Damrak feels heavily geared toward visitors; Nieuwmarkt and the lanes around the old churches have more character. This is the practical choice rather than the most restful one.
Check the actual street before booking. Warmoesstraat and the lanes around De Wallen suit late-night wandering better than early bedtimes, while quieter pockets exist nearby. Skip it if your Amsterdam fantasy is a peaceful canal outside the door; Jordaan or the southern canals make a better match.
- Best for: travelers without a car, shopping
- Skip it if: You need reliably quiet nights; You dislike tourist-heavy streets
- Getting around: Walk the old town; tram 4/14 and metro 52 at Rokin cover longer trips; Schiphol trains run directly to nearby Centraal.
- After dark: Expect late crowds around De Wallen and Warmoesstraat; a room facing a quieter street matters more than the district name.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $393 a night

Where to look in Dam Square & Old Centre
- Dam Square. Choose the square for the Royal Palace and central shopping; this is sightseeing convenience, not a restful neighbourhood retreat. Hotels here: Hotel TwentySeven, Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam.
- Stationsplein and northern Damrak. Start here for rail arrivals and day trips; expect a busy visitor-facing doorstep rather than intimate canal streets. Hotels here: Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam, NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace, ibis Amsterdam Centre.
- Singel around Kattengat. Look just west of the main arrival streets for canal scenery while keeping central sights within walking reach. Hotels here: Hotel The Craftsmen, Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Centre, Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel.
How to choose
- Choose Hotel TwentySeven if you want spacious, sound-insulated suites and highly personal service, without needing a gym or full spa.
- Choose Hotel The Craftsmen if inventive canal-house design and thoughtful staff matter more than step-free access.
- Choose Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam if you want to arrive opposite Centraal and still have an indoor pool.
What paying more buys
Ibis Amsterdam Centre is cheaper than most here and puts transport first, with very small rooms. Park Plaza Victoria adds a pool and sauna without a major luxury premium; Hotel TwentySeven's much higher rate buys spacious suites, substantial sound insulation and personal service. Rail-focused travelers spending little time indoors need not pay for the suites. Typical rates with Axel here run from $270 a night at ibis Amsterdam Centre to $1,343 at Hotel TwentySeven (last 30 days).
