Axel's take: 7.9/10

A practical station-side base, provided you can live with small rooms. a no-frills 3-star beside Amsterdam Centraal, scored for what it is.

ibis Amsterdam Centre is a no-frills 3-star whose biggest strength is making Amsterdam easy: Centraal is steps away, with canals and the old centre within walking distance. We'd pick it for a short, transport-focused city break rather than a hotel-led holiday. Recent Expedia and Accor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and clean rooms, while the downstairs bar offers somewhere to unwind beyond the bedroom.

The compromise is space and equipment. Accor lists the smallest Cosy rooms at just 12 square metres, and cramped rooms recur in guest feedback. Don't assume a kettle or fridge comes with your room. Train noise divides reviewers: some hear it, others report little disturbance. You pay for convenience here; we'd skip it if spacious rooms, dependable silence or boutique character matter more than easy arrivals.

• Best for: rail travelers and short stopovers; sightseers who spend their days out; travelers prioritizing transport connections

• Watch out for: very small Cosy rooms; train noise in some rooms; limited in-room extras

• Location: Steps from Centraal, with trains, trams and metro nearby; roughly ten minutes' walk to Dam Square.

• Rooms: Simple and compact: Cosy rooms start at 12 square metres; standard doubles and twins at 17.

• Cleanliness: Recent reviews across Expedia, Accor and Trip.com are generally positive about cleanliness.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a repeated strength, despite occasional less welcoming encounters.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, 24-hour reception, breakfast buffet and a downstairs bar; check your room's tea-making facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Cashless hotel; city tax applies, and breakfast costs extra unless included in your booking.
