Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong canalside base if you prefer quieter surroundings to a central address. a waterfront 4-star in residential Amsterdam Zuid, scored for what it is.

Apollo is a waterfront 4-star in Amsterdam Zuid, and we'd pick it for a quieter neighborhood stay rather than doorstep sightseeing. Expedia and Booking.com guests consistently praise comfortable beds, helpful staff and breakfast; recent Expedia reviews remain particularly positive about cleanliness. Canal-facing rooms and The Harbour Club's waterside terrace are the main draws, with a 24-hour gym adding practical appeal.

The compromise is location: exploring the historic center means a tram ride, cycling or a longer walk. Room condition is also uneven. Expedia and Trip.com guests mention some dated rooms and bathrooms, so don't assume the bold public-space styling carries through everywhere. Parking and breakfast can add noticeably to the bill. It's a strong pick for couples and business travelers happy outside the busiest streets; we'd skip it if central sightseeing convenience or uniformly fresh interiors matter most.

• Best for: couples seeking quieter canalside surroundings; business travelers visiting Amsterdam Zuid; travelers comfortable using trams or bikes

• Watch out for: outside the historic center; some dated rooms and bathrooms; parking and breakfast extras

• Location: Residential Oud-Zuid waterfront; useful for Museumplein and RAI, but not a central canal-ring address.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and appealing canal-view options; condition and layouts vary between rooms.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall ratings and mostly positive recent feedback, despite occasional housekeeping complaints.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff earn repeated praise across Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com.

• Amenities: Waterside dining, terrace, 24-hour gym, bicycle rental and EV charging; no airport shuttle.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is a substantial extra; check breakfast inclusion, and confirm pet charges directly.
