Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong central choice for classic comfort, with compact rooms the main compromise. a historic 4-star city hotel near Nyhavn, scored for what it is.

Phoenix Copenhagen is a historic 4-star near Nyhavn and Amalienborg, and we'd choose it for sightseeing with a traditional hotel feel. Recent Booking.com, Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, comfortable beds and cleanliness. Breakfast generally earns strong reviews too. Its central location is the biggest advantage: you can explore much of the city on foot, with metro connections nearby.

The main compromise is space. The hotel lists compact doubles at just 14 square metres, and even standard doubles aren't generous. Bathrooms vary, so request your preferred bath or shower arrangement. Some guests also report street noise or creaky floors, though many find it quiet. Breakfast isn't included in every booking, and parking costs extra. We'd skip it if spacious rooms or reliably silent surroundings matter more than location and character.

• Best for: first-time Copenhagen visitors; couples on sightseeing breaks; travelers who prefer traditional hotels

• Watch out for: compact bedrooms and variable bathroom layouts; occasional street and floorboard noise; breakfast and parking may add to the bill

• Location: Excellent for Nyhavn, Amalienborg and central sightseeing, with metro stations within walking distance.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds, air conditioning and coffee machines; entry-level rooms are small.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, backed by strong cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Welcoming, helpful reception staff attract repeated praise across several sites.

• Amenities: Breakfast buffet, restaurant and bar, fitness room, terrace and bike rental.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; parking is charged, limited and cannot be reserved directly at the hotel.
