Hotels in Charlestona large, independent 5-star hotel in Charleston’s historic district
8.6/10
Gracious downtown luxury, but ongoing renovations make room placement especially important.
The Charleston Place is a large, independent 5-star hotel, no longer a Belmond property, with a prime historic-district location. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want full-service luxury within walking distance of the City Market, restaurants and shopping. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise genuinely helpful staff, comfortable rooms and high standards of cleanliness. The renovated rooftop pool adds another compelling reason to book.
The catch is that the wider renovation remains unfinished. Several Tripadvisor guests report disruptive construction noise, and the hotel confirms its spa is closed for redevelopment, with treatments offered at sister property The Cooper instead. The gym is temporarily relocated, too. A daily resort experience fee and paid valet add to the extras. We’d skip it for a spa-focused escape or a stay where daytime quiet is essential; otherwise, ask specifically about work near your assigned room.

Best for: first-time Charleston visitors; couples wanting full-service luxury; families exploring downtown
Watch out for: ongoing renovation and construction noise; on-site spa closed for redevelopment; daily resort fee and paid valet
Location: Highly walkable historic-district setting beside the City Market; this is not a beachfront hotel.
Rooms: Comfortable rooms earn strong praise; ask about renovation work near your room before arrival.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Expedia reviews and Booking.com’s category ratings.
Service: Warm, helpful staff are the clearest recurring positive across recent guest reviews.
Amenities: Renovated rooftop pool is open; spa is closed, and the gym has moved temporarily to the second floor.
Fees and surprises: Daily resort experience fee, paid valet and an incidental authorization at check-in.
