RIU hotels rated: 6.7/10 for how they treat paying guests

Book RIU for included essentials, not last-minute flexibility

Our take: We'd book RIU for an all-inclusive holiday with core spending covered, not for last-minute flexibility.[1][Axel data] It also suits travelers booking through agencies because eligible stays retain nightly points, but US Plaza facility fees and conflicting loyalty terms deserve a close check.[2][3][4][5]

Best for

  • All-inclusive resort holidays
  • Agency bookings that still earn points
  • Plans settled well before arrival

Watch out for

  • Early cancellation cutoffs
  • US Plaza facility fees
  • Conflicting status thresholds

Scorecard

Total-price honesty (20%)
7.0

No supplier quotes carried fees, but US Plaza hotels have distributor-listed facility charges and RIU's first-screen total remains unclear.

Cancellation flexibility (15%)
5.6

Refundable rates are widely available, but cancellation deadlines are often at least 72 hours before arrival and there is no chain-wide flexible deadline.

Repriceability (15%)
5.8

Flexible bookings offer a route to lower prices before cancellation deadlines, but amendments, promotional restrictions and unclear guarantee terms limit confidence.

Channel and member-rate fairness (10%)
8.4

Eligible third-party stays retain nightly points and access to tier requests, while direct bookings receive additional points and selected transfer benefits.

Loyalty value and fairness (10%)
6.3

Fixed-value points are understandable, but redemption caps, conflicting status thresholds, availability-dependent benefits and change-without-notice terms weaken the program.

Gotcha fees and terms (10%)
7.2

All-inclusive plans cover core spending, but early-departure penalties, security holds and restricted resort-credit coupons require attention.

Consistency of the stay (20%)
7.1

Reviewed hotels perform steadily for their class, while older survey praise and recent property-specific complaints caution against choosing by label alone.

Included essentials, but check Plaza fees

RIU's FAQ says destination-dependent charges can include a Facility Fee and government taxes, disclosed during website or app booking.[6] Its contracting terms promise a final rate breakdown, not explicitly an all-in price on the first screen.[7]

Among 5,641 rates Axel's suppliers quoted at 31 RIU hotels from September 26 to October 25, 2026, excluding the Philippines and Indonesia, none carried a mandatory property fee.[Axel data] That is a floor, not proof of a fee-free portfolio, because suppliers can omit hotel charges.

Two examples show why Plaza needs a separate check: distributors list a facility fee of US$29 plus tax per room per night at Riu Plaza Miami Beach and a minimum fee of US$29 plus tax per room per night at Riu Plaza New York Times Square.[3][4] Miami Beach also confirms limited paid valet parking, which Hotels.com lists at US$60 nightly; RIU's own parking FAQ gives no amount.[8][9]

In an August 2024 business response, Riu Plaza Chicago acknowledged excluding its facility fee from its displayed tax-inclusive price.[10] That predates the US federal rule effective May 12, 2025, which requires calculable mandatory lodging fees in advertised prices.[11] We could not confirm RIU's current first-screen inclusion from its published booking language, so the historical Chicago response should not be treated as evidence of today's display.[6][7][10]

Refundable does not mean last-minute flexible

RIU assigns cancellation conditions to the booked rate, market and dates rather than guaranteeing one flexible-rate deadline.[7] In the same rates, 92% were refundable.[Axel data] Of those refundable rates, 52% required cancellation at least 72 hours before check-in, while 48% allowed cancellation 24 to 72 hours before. None allowed free cancellation less than 24 hours before check-in.

A direct-booked non-refundable rate carries a penalty equal to the entire stay.[7] Payment at the hotel is available unless the selected rate requires prepayment, but payment timing does not itself establish cancellation rights.[6] RIU's FAQ directs modifications to its Call Center, while its app page advertises in-app modifications, so the route for changing a booking is not consistently described.[6][12]

We'd use a refundable booking to pursue a later price drop only while its free-cancellation window remains open.[7] We could not confirm a current official best-price-guarantee reward or claim deadline, so do not make that guarantee the reason to book.[13] RIU's US promotional codes apply only to new bookings, and changing a promotional booking outside its permitted period can invalidate the discount.[14]

Third-party stays still earn nightly points

RIU Class is free to join, with an immediately usable membership number.[5] Member rates are advertised at up to 10% off and require website or app login, or identification by membership number through the Call Center.[15][2] We'd compare complete totals rather than treat that advertised maximum as a guaranteed saving against another seller.[15]

Eligible agency, tour-operator and OTA stays earn nightly points.[2] Every third-party booking misses the additional spending-based points reserved for direct bookings, rather than losing all points.[2][16] Published status-night and tier-request clauses do not impose a general direct-booking requirement, although room benefits remain subject to availability.[2][17][18] Direct-member bookings can also receive shared airport transfers at selected destinations, generally requiring at least three nights and registration at least seven days before arrival, with exclusions and separate Maldives conditions.[2]

Clear point value, less clear status

RIU Class uses points as booking discounts: 10 points equal US$1 or €1.[19] Pre-Classic and Classic redemptions are capped at 10% and 15% of a booking, falling to 5% and 10% on member rates.[2] Gold and Diamond members can cover up to the full direct-booking price when they have enough points and meet the program conditions.[18]

Points cannot be combined with promotional codes, and bookings paid partly or entirely with points earn no holiday or additional points.[2] Points expire after more than four inactive years without notice, although RIU lists activities such as booking redemption, online pre-check-in and Riu Shop purchases as ways to extend expiration.[2][17] RIU also reserves the right to change or cancel the program and its earning or redemption tables without advance notice.[2]

The status targets conflict: current terms state 15 nights for Gold and 30 for Diamond per adult within 24 months, while RIU's August 2026 guide states 30 and 60 nights.[2][5] Get the applicable target in writing before paying for extra nights to reach status.[2][5] Gold late checkout and Diamond early check-in, late checkout and upgrades depend on availability, so we would not value them as guaranteed benefits.[17][18][2]

Read departure terms and credit conditions

RIU's general terms treat shortening a stay as a modification, with charges governed by the booked rate's conditions.[7] Its all-inclusive guide covers meals, snacks, standard drinks and entertainment, but excludes services such as spa treatments, excursions and premium drinks.[20] Covered à la carte restaurants have no extra dining charge, although most require reservations.[20] Its resort-credit promotion offers selected-service discounts, not cash, and can require additional spending.[21]

Two booking-channel examples show the early-departure range: United Vacations lists a one-night penalty at Riu Cancun, while Booking.com says Riu Caribe charges the full reserved stay.[22][23] These are examples, not a chain-wide schedule, so use the terms attached to your own reservation.[7][22][23]

Riu Plaza New York Times Square and Riu Plaza Manhattan Times Square each publish a US$50-per-room nightly security hold capped at US$300, taken by card preauthorization rather than as an automatic non-refundable fee.[24][25] For ordinary late checkout requests, RIU directs guests to the hotel or Call Center for availability and a price rather than publishing one chain-wide charge.[6]

Steady results, with property-specific exceptions

Across 46 hotels Axel has reviewed for their class and price, RIU averages 8.26 out of 10, with 80% at 8 or above and none below 7.[Axel data] The brand breakdown groups 45 properties under 'RIU Hotels', so it does not establish separate Palace, Classic and Plaza performance averages.

Which? gives RIU an 85% customer score, tied for first, but its January 2026 table still uses June to July 2024 fieldwork.[26] Strong individual examples span different lines: HolidayCheck lists Riu Palace Tenerife at 5.6/6 and Riu Plaza New York Times Square at 5.5/6.[27][28] Those examples support choosing particular hotels, not declaring one whole RIU line the strongest.[29][27][28]

Riu República has repeated 2026 reports of cleanliness and maintenance problems, while Riu Bambú has recurring complaints about dated rooms and uneven service alongside positive reports of clean accommodation and helpful staff.[30][31] Bambú's announced renovation runs from April 4 to September 11, 2027, so it is not an improvement already delivered.[32] We'd be cautious about those properties rather than treat their complaints as a verdict on every Classic or Adults Only hotel.[30][31]

  • Axel's take, 46 RIU Hotels & Resorts hotels reviewed: average 8.3/10; 80% score 8 or higher, 0% score below 7. Each hotel is scored for what it is, against its class and price. Across all hotels Axel has reviewed, the average is 8.1 and 8% score below 7.
  • Rates Axel's suppliers quoted, September 26 to October 25, 2026: 5,641 rates at 31 hotels. 92% were refundable, and 0% of those could be cancelled free until less than 24 hours before check-in. 0% of hotels added a mandatory resort, destination or similar fee to most rates.

Which RIU Hotels & Resorts brands to book

  • Riu Palace (Solid): RIU's premium resort line, with Elite Club sold as an additional service at selected hotels rather than a standard loyalty benefit.[33][34] Check operating notices: Riu Palace Jamaica lists reopening in December 2026 and Riu Palace Costa Rica in April 2027.[35][36]
  • Riu Classic (Solid): The standard resort line targets families, friends, couples and singles, with entertainment central to the offer.[37] Choose by individual hotel rather than assuming a separate Classic quality ranking, which the review breakdown does not provide.[Axel data]
  • Riu Plaza (Mixed): The city-hotel line deserves a separate total-price check because US examples carry nightly facility fees.[33][3][4] Riu Plaza New York Times Square is a strong individual example for stay quality, with a 98% HolidayCheck recommendation rate.[27]
  • Riu Party (Solid): Choose it for included party events at participating all-inclusive resorts, not as a separate hotel-quality tier.[38] Adult pool parties require guests to be at least 18, while separate family events have different access rules.[38]
  • Riu Adults Only (Mixed): This is a child-free concept at participating resorts, not a separate core hotel line or a quality guarantee.[39] We'd skip Riu República if room condition is your priority, given repeated 2026 cleanliness and maintenance complaints.[40][30]

How to book RIU Hotels & Resorts well

  • Choose a refundable rate if plans may change, but save its exact cancellation deadline because many of the same rates required at least 72 hours' notice.[7][Axel data]
  • Before booking a US Plaza hotel, check whether a facility fee applies and compare totals including any applicable fee and parking you need.[3][4][8][9]
  • Add your RIU Class number to an eligible agency or OTA stay so you can receive nightly points even though additional direct-booking points are excluded.[2][16]
  • Choose direct booking if an eligible airport transfer outweighs another seller's saving, and register the transfer at least seven days before arrival.[2]
  • Before paying for extra nights to earn status, ask RIU to confirm your Gold or Diamond qualification target in writing.[2][5]
  • Before booking Palace Jamaica or Palace Costa Rica, check reopening notices against your travel dates rather than relying on older opening announcements.[41][35][36]

What would raise the score

  • Include every calculable mandatory property fee in the first displayed total across all booking markets.
  • Set a chain-wide flexible-rate option with free cancellation until 24 hours before arrival.
  • Publish accessible best-price-guarantee terms and offer a clear way to apply a lower direct rate before the cancellation deadline.
  • Reconcile status thresholds across all RIU Class pages and require advance notice of material program changes.

Questions about RIU Hotels & Resorts

Are all RIU hotels all-inclusive?

No. RIU says more than 74% of its properties offer All Inclusive by RIU, while Plaza is its city-hotel line.[42] Check the booked meal plan rather than assuming resort inclusions apply to every RIU hotel.[33][43]

Does RIU charge resort or facility fees?

Some US Plaza hotels do: distributors list US$29 plus tax per room per night at Riu Plaza Miami Beach and a minimum of US$29 plus tax per room per night at Riu Plaza New York Times Square.[3][4] None of the same rates carried a mandatory property fee, but supplier omissions mean that does not establish a fee-free chain.[Axel data]

Can I cancel a RIU booking for free?

Only if your booked rate permits it and you meet its deadline; RIU has no universal flexible-rate cutoff.[7] Non-refundable direct rates carry a penalty equal to the full stay.[7]

Can I get a lower RIU price after booking?

A refundable booking gives you a route to cancel and rebook before its free-cancellation deadline, but promotional restrictions can change the saving.[7][14] We could not confirm current official best-price-guarantee terms or a guaranteed right to a downward price adjustment.[7][12][13]

Will I earn RIU Class points through Booking.com or a travel agent?

Eligible third-party stays earn nightly points.[2] You will not earn the additional spending-based points reserved for bookings through RIU's website, app or Call Center.[16]

Is RIU Class worth joining, and is it Elite Club?

We'd join for free member rates and points, while checking redemption caps and treating room benefits as availability-dependent.[5][15][2] RIU Class is the loyalty program; Elite Club is a premium service attached to selected Palace room categories, not the same thing.[34][44]
