Axel's take: 8.6/10

A dependable central base with standout breakfast, but choose your room carefully. a historic 4-star city hotel on Dublin's busy O'Connell Street, scored for what it is.

The Gresham is a historic 4-star city hotel that delivers where a Dublin sightseeing base should: location, comfortable beds and a substantial breakfast. We'd put it firmly on the shortlist for a first visit. Tripadvisor and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff and clean rooms, while Booking.com's strong cleanliness and comfort scores reinforce that picture. A major room refurbishment completed in 2024 also makes older complaints about dated interiors less useful.

The trade-off is bustle rather than boutique intimacy. Recent guests mention street, corridor and lift noise, and breakfast can involve queues at busy times. Room sizes and outlooks vary, so check the category and request a room away from lifts if sleep matters most. Parking costs extra. We'd skip it for a hushed retreat, but it's a strong, practical choice for exploring Dublin.

• Best for: first-time Dublin visitors; sightseers using public transport; travelers who prioritize breakfast

• Watch out for: street, corridor and lift noise; breakfast queues at peak times; variable room sizes and outlooks

• Location: Central O'Connell Street address, convenient for sightseeing and airport buses, but busy outside.

• Rooms: Refurbished in 2024; comfortable beds earn praise, though size, outlook and noise vary.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across guest feedback, supported by Booking.com's strong category score.

• Service: Friendly, accommodating staff attract repeated praise, with occasional complaints about problem handling.

• Amenities: Buffet breakfast, Toddy's restaurant, lounge bar, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour gym.

• Fees and surprises: Parking carries an additional charge; request a quiet room rather than assuming one.
