Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong downtown splurge, especially for couples who appreciate elaborate bathrooms and a rooftop bar. A luxury boutique hotel in a historic downtown Buffalo building, scored for what it is.

Curtiss is a luxury boutique hotel in downtown Buffalo, and we'd pick it for a romantic weekend rather than understated elegance. Its high-tech bathrooms, indoor-outdoor Urban Hot Springs and VUE rooftop lounge give it more personality than a standard business hotel. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms and helpful staff. Complimentary valet parking and continental breakfast are welcome extras, and the location works well for Shea's and downtown restaurants.

The trade-offs are mostly about polish and personal taste. Some guests find the digital shower controls confusing, while breakfast earns more modest praise than the rooms. Tripadvisor feedback also flags dim interiors, and a recent Reddit wedding-party account warns about nearby nightlife noise on summer weekends. We'd skip it if you need guaranteed quiet or expect every detail to meet exacting five-star standards.

• Best for: Couples on a downtown getaway; Travelers who enjoy high-tech bathrooms; Theater and restaurant weekends

• Watch out for: Possible summer-weekend nightlife noise; Complicated digital shower controls; Simple continental breakfast

• Location: Central downtown base within walking distance of Shea's, the convention center and Metro Rail.

• Rooms: Distinctive, technology-heavy rooms with elaborate showers; some guests find the interiors too dark.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength in recent feedback, supported by Expedia's particularly strong cleanliness rating.

• Service: Recent guests generally praise friendly, helpful staff, though Tripadvisor records occasional service lapses.

• Amenities: Indoor-outdoor Urban Hot Springs, rooftop lounge, restaurant, spa and fitness center.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking and continental breakfast are complimentary; in-room minibar items cost extra.
