Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong central hostel with better shared spaces than bedside privacy. a design-led hostel with dorms, private rooms and a courtyard pool, scored for what it is.

TOC is a design-led hostel, not a conventional one-star hotel, and a strong pick for exploring Barcelona without sacrificing useful extras. Its Eixample location puts Universitat metro and Plaça de Catalunya within easy reach, while the courtyard pool, bar and shared kitchen give it more appeal than a basic dorm bed. Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com guests broadly agree on the strengths: convenient surroundings, generally clean rooms and helpful staff.

The main compromise is dorm privacy: recent guests across sites repeatedly mention bunks without curtains, and shared-room noise can interrupt sleep. Bring a padlock for your locker, budget for towel rental in dorms, and check luggage-storage charges rather than assuming they're included. We'd choose it for a central sightseeing base with sociable common spaces; light sleepers and anyone wanting hotel-style privacy should book a private room or look elsewhere.

Best for: solo travelers comfortable with dorms; friends on sightseeing trips; travelers who want a kitchen and pool
Watch out for: dorm bunks lack privacy curtains; shared-room noise; towel rental and luggage-storage charges
Location: Central Eixample base near Universitat metro, with Plaça de Catalunya a short walk away.
Rooms: Private doubles and quadruples plus six- and eight-bed dorms; curtainless bunks limit privacy.
Cleanliness: Generally strong guest feedback across major sites, including recent praise for clean bedding and rooms.
Service: Helpful reception staff earn frequent praise, though some guests report less satisfactory problem handling.
Amenities: Courtyard pool, terrace, bar, shared kitchen, laundry and 24-hour reception; Expedia lists the pool as seasonal.
Fees and surprises: Bring a locker padlock; dorm towels cost extra, and guests report paid luggage storage.
