Axel's take: 8.7/10

Strong service and Old Town access make this stylish luxury hotel worth considering. a design-led 5-star boutique hotel in El Born, scored for what it is.

The Barcelona EDITION is a design-led 5-star boutique hotel beside Santa Caterina Market, and a strong pick for exploring the Old Town without sacrificing attentive service. Recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, cleanliness and convenient location. The rooftop bar and intimate Punch Room give it a social identity beyond somewhere to sleep; we'd choose it for a couples' city break built around restaurants, galleries and cocktails.

The main compromise is space. Room-size complaints recur across sites, and entry-level rooms are compact for this luxury bracket. The rooftop pool is a plunge pool, not somewhere for proper swimming, while the public spaces are intimate rather than expansive. We'd skip it if generous room dimensions and resort-style facilities matter more than design, service and being able to walk out into historic Barcelona.

• Best for: couples on a luxury city break; Old Town sightseeing on foot; design and cocktail enthusiasts

• Watch out for: compact entry-level rooms; plunge pool rather than a swimming pool; breakfast and valet parking cost extra

• Location: Beside Santa Caterina Market, with the cathedral, Picasso Museum and El Born restaurants within walking distance.

• Rooms: Stylish walnut-and-marble interiors and praised bedding, but limited space is a recurring complaint.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong feedback across recent Expedia, Tripadvisor and Trip.com reviews.

• Service: Warm, proactive staff are the clearest recurring strength across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Rooftop plunge pool, complimentary gym, Veraz restaurant and two distinctive cocktail venues.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists cooked-to-order breakfast, valet parking and airport transfers as additional charges.
