#5 of 9 hotels in Lazimpat by Axel's take. Lazimpat is #4 of 8 places to stay in Kathmandu. The best hotels in Lazimpat, ranked · Where to stay in Kathmandu

Axel's take: 8.5/10

Palace character, helpful staff and a lovely pool outweigh some old-building compromises. a historic 4-star hotel in a former palace in Lazimpat, scored for what it is.

Hotel Shanker is a historic 4-star in a former Rana palace, and we'd pick it for character rather than sleek, modern luxury. Its gardens and outdoor pool give you somewhere pleasant to unwind outside Thamel's busiest streets. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and generous breakfasts; Booking.com also shows strong cleanliness and comfort ratings. It's a strong choice for sightseeing with downtime between outings.

The compromise is consistency: some rooms are smaller or less appealing than the grand public spaces suggest. Some guests also flag wedding music near the function rooms, so request a room away from events. Expedia lists guestroom renovations scheduled to finish October 1, 2026, but completion remains unconfirmed; check before booking. We'd skip it if contemporary rooms and predictable quiet matter more than heritage atmosphere.

  • Best for: travelers who enjoy historic hotels; couples combining sightseeing with pool time; pre- and post-trek downtime

  • Watch out for: room sizes and outlooks vary; possible wedding noise near function rooms; confirm guestroom renovation completion

  • Location: Lazimpat setting within walking reach of Thamel, Garden of Dreams and the palace museum.

  • Rooms: Comfortable beds and traditional furnishings; some rooms feel compact rather than palatial.

  • Cleanliness: Strong recent feedback, supported by Booking.com's high cleanliness rating.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across review sites.

  • Amenities: Outdoor pool, gardens, spa, restaurants and bars; breakfast earns frequent praise.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion varies; airport transfers and some check-in/out flexibility cost extra. Confirm renovation status.
