Axel's take: 8.1/10

A comfortable Nairobi base whose helpful staff outweigh some uneven service. A traditional mid-range business hotel near central Nairobi, scored for what it is.

The Heron is a traditional mid-range business hotel near central Nairobi, and a strong pick for practical comfort rather than contemporary luxury. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. The pool, gym, spa and on-site dining make it useful for both business trips and a few nights around a safari. We'd choose it for its facilities and good value rather than a fashionable address.

The trade-offs are less consistent restaurant service and some older room fittings: Booking.com guests mention slow meals, while room-condition complaints are less consistent than the praise for cleanliness. Breakfast attracts mixed opinions, although recent Expedia feedback is mostly positive. We'd skip it if you expect polished luxury or need every service request handled quickly. Check breakfast inclusion and reconfirm any airport transfer before arrival.

• Best for: Business travelers watching their budget; Pre- and post-safari stays; Travelers wanting a pool and gym

• Watch out for: Restaurant service can be slow; Some older room fittings; Confirm airport transfers directly

• Location: On Jakaya Kikwete Road, roughly three kilometres from the city centre according to the hotel.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable, with air conditioning, desks and refrigerators; some guests find the fittings dated.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent Expedia feedback and Booking.com's category ratings.

• Service: Staff warmth earns repeated praise, but dining speed and follow-through can be uneven.

• Amenities: Pool, gym, spa, restaurants, free Wi-Fi and free self-parking.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast depends on the booking plan; airport transfers cost extra, and published checkout times differ across sites.
