Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong downtown pick for character and convenience, provided you can tolerate street noise. A historic 4-star boutique hotel in downtown Cleveland, scored for what it is.

The Kimpton Schofield is a historic 4-star boutique hotel that makes a strong base for downtown Cleveland. Its handsome 1902 building puts Progressive Field, Rocket Arena and Playhouse Square within easy walking distance. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms and welcoming staff, while Betts, the downstairs restaurant, earns its own enthusiastic mentions. We'd choose it for a sports or theater weekend, especially with a pet: the hotel welcomes them without an extra fee.

The main compromise is sleep. Street noise and sirens recur across review sites, including reports from guests otherwise happy with their stay; request a quieter, rear-facing room. Valet parking adds a substantial extra cost, and there is no pool. We'd skip it if silence or a full set of leisure facilities matters more than location and boutique character.

• Best for: Sports and theater weekends; Travelers bringing pets; Downtown sightseeing on foot

• Watch out for: Street noise and sirens; Costly valet parking; No pool

• Location: Central, walkable base for Progressive Field, Rocket Arena, dining and Playhouse Square.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and distinctive decor; request a rear-facing room to reduce traffic noise.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback, with recent guests repeatedly describing clean, well-kept rooms.

• Service: Welcoming staff earn consistent praise, though some guests report uneven problem handling.

• Amenities: Betts restaurant, fitness center and pet-friendly policies; no swimming pool.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking costs extra; pets stay without an additional fee, and complimentary Wi-Fi is advertised for rewards members.
