Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong Old Town luxury pick, with standout service and a rooftop worth lingering on. a colonial-style luxury boutique hotel inside Cartagena’s walled city, scored for what it is.

Bastión is a colonial-style luxury boutique hotel inside Cartagena’s walled city, and we’d shortlist it for a sightseeing-focused stay. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise the attentive staff, generous breakfast and rooftop pool; Booking.com’s strong cleanliness and comfort ratings reinforce that picture. Its appeal is straightforward: explore the historic center on foot, then retreat upstairs for a swim overlooking the rooftops. The hotel says breakfast is included in every rate.

Room selection deserves care. Some recent guests report noisy air-conditioning or damp smells, although those complaints sit within overwhelmingly positive feedback rather than defining the hotel. Ask for a quiet room, and flag any humidity concerns promptly. The gym is small, and this is a city hotel—not a beachfront resort. We’d look elsewhere for serious workout facilities or sand immediately outside.

• Best for: couples exploring the historic center; travelers who prioritize attentive service; sightseeing stays with rooftop pool time

• Watch out for: some reports of noisy air-conditioning and damp smells; small fitness area; not a beachfront hotel

• Location: Inside the walled city, with historic sights, restaurants and shops accessible on foot.

• Rooms: Comfort scores are strong, but some recent guests flag air-conditioning noise or damp smells.

• Cleanliness: Strong ratings across Booking.com and Expedia; guest feedback is predominantly positive.

• Service: Helpful reception and concierge staff are among the most consistently praised strengths.

• Amenities: Rooftop pool and bar, El Gobernador restaurant, spa, small fitness area and included breakfast.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; Expedia also lists possible early-check-in and late-check-out charges.
