A practical old-town base, provided you can live with noise and compact rooms. a small, no-frills 3-star in Cartagena’s walled city, scored for what it is.

Ethnic is a small, no-frills 3-star inside Cartagena’s walled city, best treated as a base for exploring rather than somewhere to spend the day. We’d pick it for walkable sightseeing and straightforward comfort. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and generally clean rooms. The hotel advertises renovated interiors and complimentary access to a separate beach club with a pool in Bocagrande; this is not a beachfront hotel.

The main compromise is sleep: street noise recurs across reviews, and choosing a balcony does not guarantee quiet. Some rooms have no windows, while small bathrooms and limited floor space are recurring drawbacks. Breakfast is served at a nearby café, with inclusion depending on your booking. There’s no elevator, either. It makes sense for short, active stays; light sleepers and travelers needing step-free access should look elsewhere.

• Best for: budget-conscious old-town explorers; short sightseeing stays; travelers comfortable with lively streets

• Watch out for: recurring nighttime street noise; compact bathrooms and windowless room categories; stairs-only access

• Location: Inside the walled city, convenient for restaurants and sights; not beachfront.

• Rooms: Basic air-conditioned rooms; the hotel advertises renovations, but size and window provision vary.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised in recent reviews, though not uniformly.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi; breakfast at a nearby café; advertised off-site beach-club and pool access.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion and beach-club availability; early check-in can cost extra, and there is no onsite parking.
