Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong historic luxury pick, with rooftop views and a few service inconsistencies. a historic five-star hotel inside Cartagena’s walled city, scored for what it is.

Charleston Santa Teresa is a historic five-star hotel built around a former 17th-century cloister. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want Cartagena’s old town on foot, handsome courtyards and a rooftop pool overlooking the city and sea. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, comfortable rooms, breakfast and genuinely helpful staff; the overall picture is convincingly positive.

The trade-off is that service isn’t uniformly seamless: some recent Tripadvisor guests describe communication difficulties, including one detailed account of check-in and spa-booking mix-ups. Historic-building steps also warrant checking if you need step-free access. A June 2026 guest noticed construction and upgrades without disruption; their current status is unconfirmed. We’d choose it for character and sightseeing, but look elsewhere for a beach resort or guaranteed frictionless luxury.

• Best for: couples wanting historic character; old-town sightseeing on foot; rooftop-pool downtime

• Watch out for: occasional service communication difficulties; confirm step-free access; check status of reported upgrade work

• Location: Inside the walled city, within walking distance of restaurants, shops and major sights.

• Rooms: Colonial and Republican buildings offer courtyard, street and sea-view categories; confirm the specific outlook.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength: Booking.com scores cleanliness 9.3, supported by recent guest praise elsewhere.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff dominate feedback, with occasional coordination and English-communication shortcomings.

• Amenities: Rooftop pool, spa, 24-hour gym and Harry Sasson-designed dining are confirmed by the hotel.

• Fees and surprises: Airport transfers cost extra; Expedia lists no on-site parking and pool access ending at 6 p.m.
