Axel's take: 6.9/10

A convenient city-and-beach base, but the all-inclusive experience needs more consistency. a simple mid-range all-inclusive tower by Bocagrande beach, scored for what it is.

Decameron Cartagena is a simple mid-range all-inclusive tower facing Bocagrande beach, not a sprawling beachfront resort. We'd consider it for travelers who want meals covered while mixing beach time with Cartagena sightseeing. Location is its clearest strength, and guests frequently praise helpful restaurant and bar staff. Booking.com feedback is notably warmer than Expedia's, with cleanliness generally earning better marks than facilities.

The compromises are harder to overlook when you're spending most of your holiday at the hotel. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly describe tired rooms, unreliable air-conditioning, limited food variety and competition for dinner reservations. The small pool can feel crowded, too. The hotel now advertises app-based restaurant booking, but we'd still confirm availability early. It's a workable convenience pick; we'd skip it for a food-focused holiday, polished rooms or an effortless resort stay.

• Best for: travelers combining sightseeing and beach time; families prioritizing included meals over resort polish

• Watch out for: recurring air-conditioning and room-maintenance complaints; limited dinner availability and repetitive food; small, sometimes crowded pool

• Location: Facing Bocagrande beach, with convenient access to shops, restaurants and the historic center.

• Rooms: Simple rooms with air-conditioning and Wi-Fi; recent guests repeatedly report dated furnishings and cooling problems.

• Cleanliness: Generally a stronger point than maintenance, although individual experiences vary.

• Service: Restaurant and bar teams receive frequent praise; reception and problem handling are less consistent.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, children's water-play area, gym, bars and scheduled entertainment; pool space is limited.

• Fees and surprises: Specialty dinners require reservations; confirm availability and transfer inclusions rather than assuming everything is covered.
